This precision-ground hardened steel ring provides the inner raceway for a rolling-element bearing — it rotates with the shaft while the rolling elements (balls or rollers) run between its polished surface and the fixed outer race. Surface hardness and dimensional tolerances determine the load capacity of the entire bearing assembly: deviations of even a few microns from OEM specification cause uneven contact stress and fatigue spalling under the high radial and axial loads typical of heavy commercial vehicle transmissions. Inspect for pitting, heat discolouration, or scoring of the raceway whenever a bearing is disassembled. Always replace the inner and outer race as a matched pair — fitting a new inner race against a worn outer race concentrates contact stress on the worn areas and causes rapid re-failure. Press into position using a correctly-sized sleeve that contacts only the inner race — never use impact directly on the bearing, and never drive against the rolling elements.
