Kolbenschmidt sputter-bearing connecting rod bearing set (pair) for MAN 126 series diesel engines. Each pair provides the upper and lower shell bearings for one connecting rod — order one pair per rod being replaced. Sputter bearings use a physical vapour deposition process to apply a tin-aluminium-silicon overlay at the molecular level across the bearing surface, producing a running layer with significantly higher fatigue resistance and embeddability (ability to absorb small hard particles without scoring the crankshaft) compared to conventional babbitt or electroplated copper-lead overlays. This makes them the appropriate specification for heavily loaded engines operating under high specific power outputs. Kolbenschmidt is one of the original developers of sputter bearing technology and manufactures this set for MAN 126 engine rebuilds. Always use only the correct standard or undersize shells to match the crankshaft journal condition — mixing sizes within the same engine will result in oil pressure loss and rapid fatigue failure. Measure oil clearance with plastigauge before final assembly and verify oil feed drilling alignment. Replace the connecting rod big-end bolts at the same time if the manufacturer's torque-to-yield specification has been reached.
